Background to Children for Christ Ministry

Established in 2003, Children for Christ Ministry (CFCM) is a small inter-denominational, Christian charity working to reach the children of Malawi with the Gospel. Based in Blantyre, CFCM was founded by Bible college students with a heart to go out into rural Malawi and equip Sunday school teachers and establish Bible clubs. The ministry continues with the same focus and vision. CFCM is now a registered charity in Malawi.

Malawi is a peaceful and welcoming land that fully deserves its title ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’. However, materially speaking it is one of the world’s poorest nations: 83% of Malawians live in rural areas and are mostly subsistence farmers, with 70% living on less than £1.40 a day. Its people are also very young, with 43% of Malawi’s population of 19.2million aged 14 or under, compared with only 18% in the UK.

Despite the young population, children’s ministry in Malawi is typically given a very low priority in a resource-challenged church. Too often, children are expected to sit quietly in the corner of an adult oriented service, or be entertained through songs of dubious merit or memorising of Bible texts with no context or explanation. CFCM’s message to churches is unfamiliar and challenging – that children can and should be able to engage with the Bible, respond to Jesus and grow in faith.
